Police Provide Update in Murrieta Stabbing Arrests

Murrieta police have provided more information about two suspects' alleged involvement in a stabbing that sent a 17-year-old boy to the hospital Wednesday night.

The incident that left the victim with a single-stab wound was reported just after 7:20 p.m. Wednesday in the 39300 block of Medina Court, according to Murrieta police Lt. Rob Firmes. About an hour later, suspects Nolan Samuel Haney, 18, and Jaime Rebecca Gatewood, 20, were taken into custody in near Stillwater Drive and Halcyon Court in Menifee, the lieutenant confirmed.

Upon locating the suspects, officers allegedly found drugs and drug paraphernalia in the car Haney and Gatewood reportedly left the scene in. Items recovered from the Explorer included methamphetamine, syringes and Xanax, Firmes said.

The pair reportedly confessed their involvement in the stabbing to officers, Murrieta police Sgt. Daryl Underwood told Patch late Wednesday.

Haney was arrested on suspicion of possession of a controlled substance for sales, infliction of great bodily injury and admonishing a weapon with force. As of Thursday, he was being held at Southwest Detention Center in lieu of $65,000 bail, sheriff's jail records showed.

Gatewood was cited and arrested on suspicion of possession of a controlled substance for sale, misdemeanor accessory and probation violation. She was released from custody Thursday morning after spending the night at Southwest Detention Center.

The victim was in stable condition as of Wednesday night after having to undergo surgery due to lacerations to his liver and diaphragm, according to police.

Investigators believe the victim and the suspects knew each other, Firmes said, about the incident that took place on a sidewalk of the residential street.

"It was over some sort of disagreement," the lieutenant told Patch.
