Owner of Akita That Mauled Boy In Murrieta Home Improvement Store Arraigned

The toddler received 50 stitches for tears to his head, jaw, neck and around his right eye, according to police. Detectives obtained surveillance video from Lowe's and distributed it to the public, resulting in the identification of the dog's owner.

A Murrieta man accused of standing by while his dog mauled a 3-year-old boy pleaded not guilty Thursday to a felony charge.

Robert Steven Kahn, 62, was arrested last month after his 3-year-old Akita, police said, inflicted severe injuries on a toddler at a Lowe's Home Improvement store in Murrieta.

Kahn was charged with being a negligent owner of an animal that caused great bodily injury. He appeared with his attorney Thursday before Riverside County Superior Court Judge Timothy Freer, who scheduled a felony settlement conference in the case for March 18. Kahn remains free on $5,000 bail.

The status of his dog could not immediately be confirmed with Wildomar- based Animal Friends of the Valleys,  a nonprofit that provides animal control services in Murrieta and surrounding communities. AFV impounded the Akita in early January, but there was no word on whether it was euthanized or released back to Kahn.

According to Murrieta police Lt. Tony Conrad, shortly before noon on Dec. 28, Kahn was walking with his dog through the garden center at Lowe's, in the 24700 block of Madison Avenue, when a boy wandered away from his father to stroke the 75-pound husky-like breed.

Conrad said the dog was on a leash but lunged at the youngster and "bit him in the head, causing significant punctures and cuts to his face."

"The father rushed to his son's aid and spoke with the dog's owner, (who) apologized and then left the garden center ... ultimately leaving the area," Conrad said.

The toddler was rushed to nearby Inland Valley Medical Center, where he received 50 stitches for tears to his head, jaw, neck and around his right eye, according to Conrad, adding that because of the severity of the injuries, the child later was taken to Rady Children's Hospital in San Diego for further examination.

He was released the following day.

Detectives obtained surveillance video from Lowe's and distributed it to the public, resulting in Kahn's identification.

According to the lieutenant, investigators learned of two additional attacks that occurred in October and November.

"In those incidents, the dog showed aggression toward young children -- 3 and 5 years," Conrad said. "Injuries from those two incidents were less severe and did not require hospitalization."

City News Service asked the Riverside County District Attorney's Office if charges may be filed in the other two alleged incidents, but there was no immediate response.

50 stitches? That deserves a rolled-up newspaper and a "bad doggy!"
ChrisG February 28, 2014 at 09:44 AM
I am very surprised that in could not be confirmed whether or not the dog was euthanized. What are they waiting for? This animal has attacked three kids (that we know about). Just kill it already and send the bill to the owner. His fine should be all/ongoing medical bills for this boy and a penalty stiff enough that he will think real hard about ever getting another dog. Perhaps not having dogs could be part of probation? He is obviously incapable of properly training and caring for dogs.

Really mauled a boy (most people refer to mauled as to mutilate) the dog bit a kid … Why doesn’t the post read a “pit-bull” ?????

Check out the Press Enterprise - they have the accurate info on this story! Not sure why Renee does not have the facts on this. What is going on at Patch?
Joey February 28, 2014 at 01:06 PM
Marty or Alex or whatever the hell your name is, you ought to get a life instead of sitting around all day making pathetic comments about other people. Your an ass - clown and I hope some day to read about karma catching up to you.

http://www.pe.com/local-news/riverside-county/temecula/temecula-headlines-index/20140227-murrieta-lowes-slapped-with-lawsuit-over-dog-attack.ece Amazing! I cannot believe the dog was not put down! Who would want the liability of this animal that has been documented to have attacked three small children?
Alek J Hidell February 28, 2014 at 02:31 PM
Ass-clown? I thought a bit of sarcasm was harmless.... Had that attack occurred in front of me I'd follow that balding subhuman to his car and decapitate his dog with a machete as he watched... Of course, those words are incendiary around here so I stuck with something harmless. Where'd you get that bug up your ass? You low on prozac?
Steve Newman February 28, 2014 at 02:46 PM
Joey- the Patch is Marty McDucks life. aka Alec Hidell, aka Marty McVeigh. And he should know about Prozac- his drug of choice A machete- indeed- talks the talk but doesn't walk the walk..
Alek J Hidell February 28, 2014 at 02:51 PM
for months now Kleinsfeld sits here mocking your wife daily for all to read about,.... When are YOU gonna do some "walking"?
Steve Newman February 28, 2014 at 03:47 PM
Marty I just consider the source-just like with you. Jeff will get his- when he is least expecting it-and he will say "what did I do?"

Pets will be what they are and unfortunately there are times such as this when a particular pet does not fit in with the human environment. Pets [such as this dog] react usually because of past encounters perhaps with a small child that would keep hitting it [as they do] and the dog don't like it, I wouldn't either. Now that the dog has done the unacceptable thing it must be isolated from children. as one who cares for animals putting to death a pet should be a last option if possible, putting the owner whos responsibility was to restrain the dog and not just walk away and leave the scene is without a doubt responsible. Leaving after such an incident is tantamount to leaving the scene of an accident in a motor vehicle incident. The owner said sorry and walked away? somethings wrong with that person indeed and he should never be allowed to have a pet again. The poor little kid that got bit didnt know any better and just wanted to pet the dog as i guess most kids do. Im not a lawyer but in a court of law i wouldnt be surprised if some of the culpability went to the parents of the child as for allowing the kid to reach out to the dog and was the kid ever instructed not to do that. Heres hoping the child will completely recover physically as well as mentally to this trauma although i dont know if i could.

That family is damned stupid if all they are suing for is $25K. I'd gut Lowe's for S2.5 million and THEN you'd see some action when you tried to parade your beast there for all to see....
SA February 28, 2014 at 05:11 PM
McVeigh because u are a Nazi and like to take but not give … Just like your brother who blew up the Murrah Federal building ….
Steve Newman February 28, 2014 at 06:12 PM
Marty- yes you would sue for more because you are a taker and since you don't work for a living that would be easy money for you. Some people do not wish to get rich over another persons problems- that is class, you classless bumpkin- rubber band- that is a stretch.
Steve Newman February 28, 2014 at 06:59 PM
And there goes Kliener on the fired trip again- I asked you to prove it once- you could not- so you are just wasting space. As i said before, I am not threatening you- I am promising- you will get your- what ever that is. So imagine the worse- And Jeff- there is not a cop in the county that would tolerate you calling my wife a bloated cow- figure out what that means.
Steve Newman February 28, 2014 at 07:00 PM
Marty- I thought you were a little better than to be clumped in with Kleiner.
ChrisG February 28, 2014 at 07:11 PM
@kleiner, Excuse me, if one was fired from a job that one had then they did indeed have the job. Hence, it cannot be fraud if that person claimed to have had said job. Also, if they did not have the job it would not be fraud. It would be lying. To say otherwise just shows everyone how ignorant you are. Please wise up and try to be a better human being.
Steve Newman February 28, 2014 at 07:18 PM
ChrisG- you are trying to speak to Kleiener like he has a functioning brain- he does not-too much Obamacare. He kept on with these claims of me being fired after he picked it up from Joe Scalero- and they are the same. Even said he had the name of a captain who would attest to my supposed firing-but he disappeared- no proof from Klenier on any of his charges of fraud. And I served in nam with the herd- Kleinr just served pancakes at IHOP. He is just pissed that after he bragged about having sex 3 times a weeki I said his wife should get an acting award- for fake orgasims.
rubberband February 28, 2014 at 08:15 PM

just came from Sprouts on Winchester yesterday, Some fat tatted biker chick had her German Shepherd lying and panting right in front of the produce. When I called the manager to have her ejected, turns out she said it was a "service" dog. This freak had no disabilities; she was just showing off her canine son. She triumphantly added that she "didn't need to display any service tag" in order to bring in her beast. All that dandruff and filth right next to our lettuce. You Americans have the most repulsive dog fetish.
