Murrieta Police, Fire Take Part in Annual 9/11 Tribute Run

Members of the Murrieta Police and Fire Departments, along with several citizens of Murrieta and Temecula, gathered together again Wednesday morning for their annual 9/11 Tribute Run.

"Several Firefighters ran nearly 2 miles in full turnouts this year," said Murrieta police Cpl. Kent Chivington.

The tradition was initiated by Murrieta police Sgt. Daryl Underwood several years ago on a 9/11 anniversary, when he ran 10 miles by himself, carrying an American flag.

"After several years of running solo, he lowered the mileage to 5 miles and invited members of the Police and Fire Departments," Chivington said.

Each year, about 30 city police and fire personnel take part in the event depending on which day of the week the anniversary of 9/11 occurs.

The run begins and ends at Town Square Park—near the Veterans' Memorial—with a route that takes them north on Washington Avenue to Calle Del Oso Oro and back.
