Murrieta Police Capt. Selected to Serve as Interim Chief

Capt. Mike Baray, 49, will serve as interim chief for six months, a police department spokesman said.

The City of Murrieta has selected an interim chief to serve when Murrieta police .

Capt. Mike Baray will serve as interim chief for six months, according to Murrieta police spokesman Lt. Tony Conrad.

"At that time, the City Manager will make a decision on whether to make the interim title permanent," Lt. Conrad said.

Capt. Baray, 49, was one of the first 25 sworn officers in Murrieta, and in 1992 was selected as the department's first detective. He went on to serve as detective sergaent and then lieutenant sergaent. As patrol lieutenant he served as SWAT commander.

Before Murrieta, he was an officer with Long Beach Police Department beginning in 1982, Lt. Conrad said, where he worked assignments including patrol, SWAT and investigations.

As of 2009, Capt. Baray's salary was $171,183, according to the State Controller's website. He holds a bachelor's degree in criminal justice and is a graduate of Command College--the State of California's Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training. What his salary will be as interim chief has not yet been released by the City.

Conrad said the the department will likely run with one captain--Capt. Steve Porter--until a decision is made on a permanent chief for the department.

Chief Mark Wright has served since 2003.
