Murrieta Man Arrested at Lake Elsinore DUI Checkpoint

Roger Smith Norton, 52, was booked early Saturday for suspicion of drunken driving when he allegedly failed a field sobriety test.

A Murrieta man was the sole motorist sheriff's deputies suspected of drunken driving during a sobriety checkpoint in Lake Elsinore that ended Saturday morning, a sergeant said.

Roger Smith Norton, 52, was booked early Saturday for suspicion of drunken driving when he allegedly failed a field sobriety test. The overnight checkpoint was on Corydon Street, east of Palomar Road, Riverside County sheriff's Sgt. Peter Giannakakos said.

Norton remained behind bars Saturday in lieu of $2,500 bail, jail records showed.

Giannakokos said 999 vehicles passed through the checkpoint, deputies screened 23 of them, and conducted one other field sobriety test. Four vehicles were impounded and 66 motorists were cited for being unlicensed or driving with a suspended license, Giannakakos said.

How is that news? I definitely believe that driving under the influence is a terrible and irresponsible thing that puts the driver and others in danger, but identifying a person by name for something as (unfortunately) routine as a DUI seems excessive to me. Bad show, patch.

Wow, 1 for DUI, but 4 vehicles impounded, and 66 out of 999 cited for being unlicensed, or suspended licenses. I think that is a fabulous take for the night. Sure we always want more DUI suspects but driving with Suspended licenses usually means DUIs, a few of them. Good Job PD.

In fact more accidents and fatalitys are caused by unlicensed drivers ! Some of the unlicensed drivers had their licences pulled for DUI. I think it was a win/win myself.

As long as these checkpoints can get 1 driver off the road Im willing to give up my constitutional rights. I'm Ok with our city becoming communist Russia as long as we catch somebody. Its Ok with me to be stopped at a checkpoint on my way to an appointment since the checkpoint is being funded by federal dollars that originate from a United Nations grant. I know they are taking away my rights but as long as they catch somebody I'm ok with it.

How do 66 get cited from only 23 being screened?

Must be the new math.

Identifying the person arrested serves to intimadate others- get busted for DUI and people will know, other than the courts. Peer pressure.

Our family has received 2 red light tickets and I would still rather have them. We live very nearRead More Nutmeg & Clinton Keith. The intersection there is very wide and it is not uncommon for some idiot turning left on to Clinton Keith to jump out in front of the on coming traffic. One family member was involved in an accident there due to that very bone head maneuver! Now with the red light camera gone we have to worry about the traffic blowing the light on Clinton Keith. Not that it didn't happen before, but now it is an ongoing problem. Just the other day a as I was about to enter the intersection some stupid guy making a left turn jumped out in front of me and another nitwit blew the red light. I was almost broadsided and hit head-on! Maybe the red light cameras don't deter I don't know, but it sure made me pay a little more attention after having to pay the $396 fine! I hated paying the fine, but I did the crime! So I can't complain......grow up people!
