Murrieta Fire Department Invites Public to Learn 'Sidewalk CPR' June 8

News release from the Murrieta Fire Department:

The Murrieta Fire Department is hosting another “Sidewalk CPR” event to train local community members with this life saving technique. In the past CPR has been done by providing artificial breathing as well as compressing on a persons chest to mimic the action of the heart beating and the lungs using oxygen when a person is conscious. However, the American Heart Association has found new evidence that compressing the chest using a “hands only” approach is been more effective in patient’s with cardiac arrest.

Although medicine and defibrillation are important for reversing cardiac arrest, the compression part of CPR is most important and needs to happen quickly for a successful outcome. The Fire Department response can take four to six minutes and if compressions have not started, the chance of survival is low. This is why immediate CPR performed by citizens prior to fire department arrival is important.

We would like to improve on the save rate in Murrieta and have planned a free, CPR training on June 8, 2013 from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. at Fire Station 2 located at 40060 California Oaks Road. The “Sidewalk CPR” training will train members of the community to provide a new form of CPR that requires only compressing a victim’s chest in cardiac arrest. This life saving training will take approximately 10 minutes.
