Murrieta 3-Year-Old Dies When Struck by Mother's SUV

"We got a call that a mother had possibly struck her 3-year-old daughter while backing out of her driveway," Murrieta police Sgt. Jim Gruwell said. "They said she was not conscious and not breathing."

Murrieta police provided more information Monday about a tragic incident that left a 3-year-old girl dead Saturday when she was struck by her mother's SUV.

Emergency personnel responded to the 33000 block of Shamrock Lane in the Mapleton area of Murrieta just after 10:19 a.m. Saturday.

"We got a call that a mother had possibly struck her 3-year-old daughter while backing out of her driveway," Murrieta police Sgt. Jim Gruwell said. "They said she was not conscious and not breathing."

The father was there and started CPR on his daughter, Gruwell said.

Emergency personnel arrived within 5 minutes, and also tried life-saving measures.

The child—identified by the Riverside County Sheriff-Coroner's Office as Audrina Cruz—was transported to Loma Linda University Medical Center-Murrieta, where she succumbed to her injuries at 1:04 p.m. Saturday, according to Gruwell.

Murrieta police were continuing their investigation into the accident that involved a full-size SUV.

"All parties were cooperative," Gruwell said.

On Sunday, a memorial display of candles and flowers was arranged in the shape of a heart in the driveway of the Shamrock Lane home.
