Motorist Crashes Into Overturned Big Rig, Dies in I-15 Crash in Murrieta

The 27-year-old woman died at the scene of the accident, which occurred shortly before 5 a.m. north of Murrieta Hot Springs Road, CHP officials said.

A Perris woman was killed Thursday when the car she was driving crashed into an overturned big rig on the northbound Temecula Valley (15) Freeway in Murrieta, the California Highway Patrol reported.

The 27-year-old woman died at the scene of the accident, which occurred shortly before 5 a.m. north of Murrieta Hot Springs Road, said CHP Officer Rich Murrieta. Authorities withheld her name, pending notification of her relatives.

According to the preliminary investigation, the big rig was involved in a non-injury crash with another vehicle, and it overturned, blocking the No. 1 lane and part of the No. 2 lane, Murrieta said.

About three to four minutes later, a 2009 Chevrolet Impala being driven by the woman at an estimated 70 mph in the No. 1 lane slammed into the overturned big rig, Murrieta said. The northbound lanes were blocked for about two hours while an investigation was conducted.

The force from the crash was so strong, that the wreckage is barely recognizable as an Impala, photos from the scene show.
