A man who allegedly used free Wi-Fi at a Menifee eatery to view child pornography on his laptop has been arrested, according to authorities.

The incident was reported Monday, Dec. 9 at 9:45 p.m. at Menifee’s Countryside Marketplace on Haun Road.

According to Sgt. Glenn Williams of the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department, Menifee police responded to a report from a customer that an elderly man was viewing child pornography on his laptop.

“Deputies contacted the suspect inside the restaurant and confirmed he was viewing child pornography utilizing the restaurant’s open Wi-Fi,” Williams reported.

That suspect was 72-year-old Charles Turton Cook, the sergeant confirmed.

A subsequent investigation and search of Cook’s residence found he was in possession of “numerous digital photographs depicting young male children on his laptop computer,” Williams reported.

Jail records show Cook was arrested at 3:45 a.m. Dec. 10. The arrest location was listed as 30340 Haun Road in Menifee, which is the address of a Starbucks with free Wi-Fi housed inside a Super Target located at the Countryside Marketplace.

Cook was booked into Southwest Detention Center at 4:50 a.m. Dec. 10 on suspicion of sending/possessing obscene matter and his bail was set at $5,000, according to jail records. Cook was released from custody the same day, the records show. He is due to appear in court Feb. 4, 2014.

Although WiFi is good for business, it's still necessary to setup a decent firewall. If not, perverts will continue to take advantage of whatever they can get. What the stores need to do other than blocking porno sights is to also block search sites such as Google and Yahoo and come up with their own search engine. Many public offices such as libraries operate from a Proxy which is even better.

Meh… we don't need more firewalls, proxies, and modified search engines. We just need a 'Perv-O-Matic' booth. Place the disgusting pervert inside and press frappé. Problem solved.

what kind of idiot would go to a public restaurant where people gather to view this crap? Again its young boys in the pictures, something is wrong here in America there is way to much of this stuff going on and the people they catch is only the tip of the iceberg and if it isnt stopped in 30 or 40 years from now it might become legal. How? 30-40 years ago gay lifestyle was banned everywhere and deemed unacceptable but look at whats happening now, same thing can happen to kiddie porn, dont think so? what if your wrong. Its got to be stopped and now.

all-c-ing-eye:what type of person uses public wifi? These types of people who don't want it traced to their house. These pervs also like to hang out at the public libraries that also have free wireless. Yes they are on the computer right next to your kid.
