Man Shoots Self in Foot at Senior Complex

A 64-year-old man was cleaning his .45-caliber handgun when he accidentally shot himself in the foot, police said.

A 64-year-old man shot himself in the foot today at a senior citizen complex in Murrieta.

The man, who was not identified by police, called 911 at about 5 p.m. Friday to say he'd accidentally shot himself.

Police arrived at Grand Isle Senior Apartment Homes at 24425 Village Walk Place to find that the man had shot himself in his left foot while cleaning his gun, Murrieta police Sgt. Daryl Underwood confirmed.

"He was taken to the hospital for medical clearance," Underwood said. "He had a nice through and through hole in his foot."

Underwood did not know the extent of the injury or whether than man had yet been released from the hospital.

The gun, a .45-caliber, was legally registered to the man, the sergeant said.

That and other guns were taken by police for safekeeping, Underwood said.

"We just want to error on the side of caution," he said.

Underwood said the man would likely get his guns back from police once the investigation was complete.

He said there didn't appear to be any lawlessness involved, and that no one other than the gun owner was injured.
