UPDATE: Fires East of Temecula/Murrieta Contained at 51 Acres

The fires broke out midday Monday within a half mile of each other, east of Benton Road.

UPDATE 3:20 p.m.: Combined, two fires east of Temecula and Murrieta in an unincorpoated of Murrieta, have been contained at 51 acres.

The first fire, near the intersection of Wayman Way and San Ignacio Road, is contained at nine acres. The second fire, south of San Ignacio Road near Avenida Peyri, is at 42 acres, said Jody Hagemann, a spokesperson with Cal Fire/Riverside County Fire Department.

Crews, which included inmates from the Glen Oak Fire Station No. 3, will remain on the scene for at least three hours, fire officials said.

No injures were reported.

UPDATE 2:30 p.m.: An update sent via Twitter from Cal Fire/Riverside County Fire Department stated the fires were both 100 percent contained. The first fire was contained at five acres and the second at 28 acres, the message stated.

The fires may have been sparked by power lines, fire officials said. Some residents were left without power.

It was not clear how many structures were affected, but flames appeared to have skirted at least one home before crews spared it. At least one vehicle, a van, was lost along with the carport structure it was in.

ORIGINAL STORY:

Two brush fires less than a half a mile away from each other started just after noon Monday east of Temecula and Murrieta.

Together, the fires have reached a combined 25 to 30 acres, a county fire official said.

The incident has been dubbed the Wayman Fire.

The first, reported at 5 to 10 acres, is burning just south of East Benton Road, south of De Portola Road, near the intersection of Wayman Way and San Ignacio Road.

As of 12:12 p.m., the fire was burning at a slow rate of speed but with the possibility of threatening power lines, said Jody Hagemann, a spokesperson with the Riverside County Fire Department.

The second, reported to be at least 20 acres, was burning just south at San Ignacio Road and near Avenida Peyri.

Fighting the blazes were 65 firefighters among 10 engines, two helicopters, one air attack plane, four air tankers and two bulldozers.

The cause was under investigation.
