Saw Sparks Fire on I-215 in Murrieta

Flames broke out near a fenced area where construction equipment and vehicles are being stored for the widening project through Murrieta.

A fire briefly threatened construction equipment Thursday along Interstate 215 in Murrieta.

Flames broke out around 1:30 p.m. along southbound Interstate 215 at the Los Alamos Road exit, cinging fence covering erected where equipment is being stored for the interstate widening project.

The fire, which measured about 35 feet wide and 300 feet long, was sparked by an industrial saw being used by the construction workers to cut a piece of pipe, said Pat Jennings, Murrieta fire battalion chief.

Crews with the Murrieta Fire Department arrived and were successful in putting out the fire by 2 p.m.

One lane was closed on southbound Interstate 215, causing a brief traffic backup on each side of the interstate.

Four engine crews responded to the fire, including a brush truck.
