UPDATED: Smoke From Camp Pendleton Fires Continues to Blow Into Valley

Smoke from a fire burning on Camp Pendleton was blowing east over the Murrieta and Temecula valley Monday.

UPDATE 5/3 7:45 p.m.: More fires are actively burning on Camp Pendleton, Cal Fire/Riverside County Fire Department reports. 

"They are no threat to Riverside County; however, residents in Southwest Riverside County may see or smell drift smoke," the department reports.

The fires follow one that broke out Monday afternoon on Camp Pendleton, which was reported to be fully contained Tuesday morning.

"The Camp Pendleton Fire Department will continue to do sweeps and checks of the area throughout the day to ensure no flare ups occur," said Sgt. John Jackson, MCB Camp Pendleton Public Affairs, Tuesday morning.

He said the cause of that blaze, which burned nearly 100 acres, is still under investigation.

"The fire started sometime Monday afternoon on firing range 221 in the Whiskey Impact area," Sgt. Jackson said.

The fire burned nearly 100 acres. No structures were threatened and there were no injuries.

A fire that broke out on Camp Pendleton Monday afternoon was sending smoke through the Temecula and Murrieta Valley, but no structures are threatened, according to a base spokesman.

"The fire started sometime Monday afternoon on firing range 221 in the Whiskey Impact area," said Camp Pendleton’s Sgt. John Jackson. "It is anticipated to burn 75 to 100 acres.

The Whiskey Impact area covers a large swath of territory across the central part of the base.

“A cause and exact time (the fire broke out) have not been determined,” Jackson said. “No structures or personnel are – or ever were – threatened.”

The fire is being fought by Camp Pendleton Fire; no other agencies are involved at this time, Jackson said.

Jackson said he did not have information on how much of the fire had been contained as of Monday evening, or when full containment is expected.
