Fire at Murrieta Youth Center 'Suspicious,' Chief Says

A fire that threatened the new Murrieta Youth Center Sunday night is under investigation, according to the city's fire chief.

Murrieta fire crews responded to the 5,200-square-foot youth center, currently under construction at California Oaks Sports Park, at about 7:45 p.m amid several 911 calls that flames were coming from the roof, Murrieta fire Chief Matt Shobert said.

"Crews got there within five minutes and put it out before it damaged the structural components," Shobert said.

Because of firefighters' quick response, damage was minimal, he said.

The cause of the fire was still under investigation Monday.

"We are calling it suspicious at this time," Shobert said.
