Diabetic Seizure May Have Caused Head-On Collison in Downtown Murrieta

The accident occurred at about 9:35 p.m. Wednesday on Washington and Juniper in Historic Downtown Murrieta.

A head-on collision Wednesday night at Washington Avenue and Juniper Street may have been the result of a driver suffering from a diabetic seizure, police said.

Murrieta police Sgt. Steve Dyer said they received a call about a possible drunk driver entering the City limits on Washington Avenue, so officers started trailing the driver near Murrieta Valley High School.

Officers planned to lay down spike strips at Kalmia Street, but didn't get there in time.

"That would have been ideal," Dyer said. "Officers tried to stop him at a slow rate of speed for five or six blocks."

As the driver continued south down Washington Avenue disregarding stop signs and traffic signals, he rushed head-on into a Chevrolet Suburban at the intersection of Washington and Juniper.

The accident occurred at about 9:35 p.m.

Dyer said that when officers arrived, they tested the driver of the Dodge for blood alcohol. When it turned out negative and they found no alcohol in the vehicle, they determined the driver may have been suffering from a diabetic seizure.

"His blood sugar level was very low," Dyer said. "As of right now, it looks like it is going to be a diabetic seizure."

The driver of the Chevrolet received minor injuries and was transported to an area hospital. The driver of the Dodge was also transported.
