A deer was injured when it was hit by a vehicle on a dirt section of Briggs Road Friday night in Murrieta, California Highway Patrol initially reported.

At about 10:23 p.m., a caller reported that the deer had jumped in front of a vehicle near the area of Los Alamos and Briggs roads in east Murrieta, according to CHP's Web page.

The deer tried to skip away but may have suffered a broken leg, the dispatcher wrote.

At about 11 p.m., California Highway Patrol requested that Murrieta police respond to the scene, according to Murrieta police Sgt. Matt Henry.

The reporting party waited with the deer until authorities arrived.

As of midnight, the sergeant said a Murrieta officer was waiting with the injured deer until Animal Friends of the Valleys, the city's animal services provider, arrived to tend to it.

The deer appeared to be a young female.

Henry said it was an uncommon occurrence within city limits.

"You will see them rolling in the middle of the night sometimes, but for one to strike a vehicle, I haven't seen that in quite a while," Henry said.

The sergeant said the vehicle was not damaged in the collision, nor was the driver injured.

The rural, unpaved portion of Briggs Road where the deer was hit is southwest of Los Alamos Road, near Porth Road.
