UPDATE: Sheriff Investigating Winchester Woman's Death as Homicide

Wanda McGlover, 68, found dying on Brookridge Lane last Friday in French Valley spoke to her attacker just before her assault, the woman's daughter said Thursday.

This story was updated at 7:10 p.m. to include comments from Wanda McGlover's family reacting to news that the county sheriff's homicide unit has begun investigating her death as a murder.

Updated at 3:45 p.m. Sept. 27:

The Riverside County Sheriff's Department announced it is now investigating the Sept. 21 roadside death of a French Valley woman as a homicide.

Wanda McGlover, 68, of Winchester, suffered severe head injuries and died later at a hospital following her injury last Friday on Brookridge Lane.

"In a cooperative effort, the Riverside County Sheriff's Department and the California Highway Patrol initiated a joint investigation to determine the circumstances involving this incident," said sheriff's Sgt. Lisa McConnell, in a news release. "The investigation is continuing. The Riverside County Sheriff's Department is the lead investigating agency with the assistance of the California Highway Patrol."

Prior to this, CHP was the lead agency. Initial reports pointed to a hit-and-run.

Following the news about the CHU assuming the investigation, McGlover's family emailed a statement to Patch.

"My family and I are very pleased with the decision to have the Riverside County sheriff's Central Homicide Department heading up this investigation and not the CHP," reads an email sent to Patch from the family.

"We will continue to cooperate fully with all agencies involved in order to find out who did this to my mother. This was a brutal murder and justice must prevail."

The sheriff's announcement followed a press conference earlier Thursday, in which the daughter of McGlover said her mother spoke to someone just before she was assaulted.

"You’re on the phone with someone and they get hit by a car, you don’t have time to say 'excuse me,'" said a woman who identified herself only as McGlover's youngest daughter.

The woman said she was on the phone with her mother the day of the injury, as her mom took her usual walk.

"I know that a car did not hit my mother initially because I was on the phone," the woman told the media outside the Riverside County sheriff's Temecula police station.

"Someone came up to her and either grabbed her arm or grabbed her from behind or something and she said ‘excuse me' to that person, or persons."

The woman explained that investigators' opinions that her mother was struck by a hit-and-run driver do not make sense because when a vehicle bears down on someone, “they don’t have time to say 'excuse me' to the car.

"It was not hit-and-run."

Anyone with any information pertaining to the incident was asked to contact Investigator Gary Bowen of the Riverside County Sheriff's Central Homicide Unit at 951-955-2777. Citizens may also submit an anonymous tip at the Sheriff's Homicide Tipline.

I have been out all day and just got home, Lord I hate Los Angeles. And the first mail I see(Update) is this one to open and with good news all around. " Younger daughter" and other children of Ms. Wanda's, glad you have the Sheriff's Department as lead on the case. Ms. Wanda has brought more people together then the people who knew/saw her everyday on their way to work or school with her smiles, friendly talks and colorful hats and clothes, she has brought an entire community together. We are all blessed by her in all working together since this happened, to love our fellow man and neighbors and look out for one another in our small community. God bless you all, stay safe, and see you all on Sunday. Thank you Jorge. Lindy, its possible that one car was seen a few times just cruising around scoping out the neighborhood prior and around the times of 8 to 9am to see what her schedule was.

Thank u Jorge! I will definitely be there. I believe in the power of prayer! I knew Mrs. Wanda personally, just spoke to her last week. I keep playing the initial message she left on my voicemail just to hear her voice :'(. I have such deep sadness for her beautiful life to end this way. I can't even imagine what her beautiful daughters and son are going through right now. God be with them!

I am glad a memorial of this sort is being planned. I expected more flowers at the site...we all "knew" Wanda, who hadn't seen her walking and smiling?
Lady Saint September 28, 2012 at 06:49 AM
Oh Pattie I think you are the one Mrs. Wanda called to tell me about just over a week ago! She was excited about taking the boys to your ranch. She spoke such nice things about u. God Bless!

This is very sad about her passing. I ride my bicycles along this part of Washington several times a week. I have seen Wanda many times on her walks and we often say hello to each other as we pass. She was always smiling and happy everytime we passed each other and said hello. She was often on the phone but would always take the time to at least smile and wave. Crazy world we live in some days. I wish the family the best but I know that this will be hard under the circumstances. God bless.

I don't think karma is something to label this as. Like you said involved in an accident. She was not hit by a car so karma does not apply...sorry!
E September 29, 2012 at 10:07 PM
Lindy...so nice to hear our words!
maria September 30, 2012 at 02:11 AM
I am from ny i don't know if the policy is the same in cal. but when police reports are given to people involved in an accident both parties are given the report along with their addresses. so i do believe that someone, a famiy member or friend from the other unfortinate accident in August could have been staking out her home.
bette October 02, 2012 at 12:16 AM
The very first persons I would check the cars of would be the people of the family in the prior accident. Perhaps a vengeful thing? Megan sounds as though everyone loved your mom a lot but some of the other mans family members and revenge might be a motive for sure. Who had motive? opportunity? And you knowing it was NO accident now, so find out who had a reason to want her dead. And since she was loved by so many..... I would sure start with the above! I wouldn't stop until I turned over every stone.
Net October 02, 2012 at 03:31 AM
Bette, I think that would be a very good place to start looking if any investigators were smart enough to figure and add those two together.
maria October 02, 2012 at 02:37 PM
they could have used a car that was not the families. This is deffently related. Does any one know if they had the funeral services yet?
Kim Barriga October 05, 2012 at 07:38 PM
Does any body know was wandas telephone missing after the alledged attack ?
THE REAL Anita Drink October 05, 2012 at 09:07 PM
Did you watch the video, kim? Yes it is missing as well as other things.
maria October 05, 2012 at 11:40 PM
what other things were missing?
Sabrina October 12, 2012 at 04:09 PM
Why hasn't anyone related the fact that she was also a Foster Mom? I would look at the families of the kids she had in her care. I understand the logic of the other accident but there are other red flags to me as well and I hope the investigators have been looking into this as well. I truly hope they find justice for this poor lady and her children. So sorry for her loss.

That's a good point Sabrina.
