The bicyclist was pronounced dead around 9:05 a.m. Sunday on the Stevenson Canyon bike trail on the Santa Rosa Plateau Ecological Reserve, authorities said.

A bicyclist was found dead Sunday on a trail on the Santa Rosa Plateau west of Murrieta, authorities said.

Riverside County Fire Department got a report at about 8:10 a.m. of a downed cyclist on the Stevenson Canyon bike trail on the Santa Rosa Plateau Ecological Reserve, said Jody Hagemann, spokesperson for the fire department, in a report.

The adult male was unconscious and unresponsive, Hagemann said in the report.

The cyclist was about a mile and a half in on the trail--located nearest the intersection of Clinton Keith and Tenaja roads--which required an air rescue attempt because the area was too remote to immediately access, according to Hagemann.

In an update at 9:05 a.m., Hagemann said the cyclist had been pronounced dead.
