Brush Fire Burns Close to Murrieta Homes Monday

Three Murrieta homes were saved Monday afternoon from a brush fire that burned dangerously close, the Murrieta Fire Department reported.

Seventeen Murrieta firefighters responded to the blaze that was reported at about 1 p.m. in the 26000 block of Douglas Avenue at the southwestern city limits, Murrieta fire Spokesman Matt Corelli stated in a news release.

Dry grass and wind spread the flames quickly but crews were able to contain the fire within one hour to 2 1/2 acres, according to Corelli.

"Damage to irrigation pipes occurred but all three structures were undamaged," Corelli stated.

The cause of the fire was under investigation.

In light of Monday's incident, the Fire Department encouraged all residents who live in areas near open space with brush and trees to maintain their property. This means keeping all grass and brush cut back at least 100 feet from homes, and cutting and removing low-lying tree limbs next to homes.

Additionally, residents were reminded to have an early evacuation plan so traffic congestion can be avoided.
