Brush Fire Breaks Out On Camp Pendleton; Smoke Drifts Over Valley

A vegetation fire on base was no threat to Southwest Riverside County or Fallbrook, according to the North County Fire Protection District, but the area was getting smoky Monday afternoon.

A 75-acre vegetation fire broke out at Camp Pendleton Monday, but there was no threat to the area, North County Fire Protection District is telling its Facebook followers.

According to the Facebook post shortly before 5 p.m., the blaze started in the Kilo 2 area, which is off Basilone Road, near the center of the base.

Thick smoke from the fire was drifting over Southwest Riverside County.

"Residents in Southwest Riverside County may experience drift smoke throughout the evening," said Melody Hendrickson, a spokesperson with CAL FIRE/Riverside County Fire Department, in an advisory notice.

There was no word yet on when the fire will be contained or what sparked the blaze.
