Brush Fire at Murrieta-Menifee Border Contained to 1.5 Acres

The brush fire was reported at 4:37 p.m. at Carnation Avenue and Mapleton Street, a Murrieta fire official said.

Firefighters quickly gained the upper hand on a brush fire that broke out Thursday afternoon at Murrieta's city boundary with Menifee.

Crews from CAL FIRE/Riverside County and Murrieta fire departments joined forces to fight the blaze that was reported at 4:37 p.m. at Carnation Avenue and Mapleton Street, in the Mapleton community, according to Murrieta fire Battalion Chief Mario Monroy.

The fire was knocked down and contained to 1.5 acres as of 5 p.m., according to the battalion chief.

Murrieta had initially sent a full wildland response—three crews and a battalion chief—to find the fire moving at a moderate rate of spread, Monroy said.

Due to some "good natural barriers protecting homes," he said aircraft that had been assigned to the fire was canceled.

"CAL FIRE and Murrieta Fire have put together a joint command and currently have six units committed to mop up," he said at about 5:45 p.m.

The cause of the fire remained under investigation.
