Backflow, Metal Thefts Increase in Murrieta

Murrieta police are looking to solve a rash of backflow device thefts in the city.

Backflow devices and metal are increasingly being stolen in Murrieta and the police are asking the public's help.

Since April, there have been 14 reported thefts that have occurred within the city of Murrieta.

The loss is valued at $20,000, Murrieta police said Thursday.

Suspects are disconnecting the valves or cutting the pipes on both ends where the pipes go into the ground, police said.

To the thief, there is scrap value in the bronze used in such devices. They can be even more costly to replace, however.

Most of the thefts have occurred at night, but some have happened during daylight hours, police said.

The last two were during the middle of the day--one of them at , police said.

Others parks have been targeted, as well as office complexes, apartment buildings and construction sites.

If anyone sees unofficial vehicles without city or water company markings near such devices, they are encouraged to call the immediately at 951-461‐3616.
