UPDATE: Suspicious Package Deemed Safe

Riverside County sheriff's deputies responded at about 10 a.m. Friday to the 38000 block of Sky Canyon Drive to investigate a report of a suspicious package.

UPDATE 1:50 p.m. Aug. 2:

The hazardous device team opened the package and it contained paperwork, according to sheriff's Sgt. Lisa McConnell.

The package was a suitcase, she said.

A hazardous device team is investigating a suspicious package near Vons on Sky Canyon Drive just outside Murrieta city limits.

As of 1 p.m. Friday, authorities were still on scene, according to Sgt. Lisa McConnell of the Riverside County Sheriff's Department.

Deputies were first dispatched at about 10 a.m. Friday to the 38000 block of Sky Canyon Drive, on the east side of Vons, in response to a call about the package that appeared suspicious, McConnell said in an email to Patch.

The hazardous device team was called, had arrived and was still assessing the package as of 1 p.m., according to McConnell.

A Patch reader reported that police tape was blocking at least a portion of the shopping center that houses several other businesses such as a Wells Fargo branch.

The center is located near the intersection of Murrieta Hot Springs Road and Winchester Road.
