April Crime Report for Murrieta

Crimes such as auto theft and burglary are up from the same time last year.

The number of auto thefts, burglaries and acts of larceny were higher in April than one year ago in Murrieta, following a year of a decreasing crime.

According to a month-end report released by the Murrieta Police Department, there were 17 auto thefts in April, up from seven during same month last year. There were 34 burglaries last month, which was six more than this time last year. And there were 97 thefts of property valued at more than $400 (larceny), up from 86 last April.

Those figures come after the FBI released Monday its violent crime statistics for U.S. cities, which showed a nationwide decrease of violent crimes in 2010--Murrieta included.

According to the FBI report, crimes in Murrieta decreased in all areas in 2010 except for arson, which went from three offenses in 2009 to six in 2010, and murder, which went from zero in 2009 to one in 2010.

The City of Temecula also decreased in all areas in 2010, except for murder, which went from one in 2009 to two in 2010, and arson, which went from four offenses to five, according to the FBI.

Other statistics provided in Murrieta's month-end report for April showed there were increases in police and fire responses over last year. Last month, police responded to 3,490 calls and fire responded to 641 calls. Those were up from 3,459 police responses and 564 fire responses during the month of April last year.
