Alleged Sex Offender Arrested at Checkpoint

An alleged sex offender was arrested at the end of a 90 mph chase.

The suspect sped through the Border Patrol checkpoint Wednesday south of Murrieta and Temecula, triggering a high-speed chase, according to Agent Scott Simon.

He drove his blue 1998 Ford F-150 at 90 mph north on Interstate 15 before doing a U-turn on the shoulder and driving against traffic, the agent said.

He momentarily got away when the agents refused to drive the wrong way on the freeway, Simon said.

"Agents discontinued the pursuit after the suspect drove southbound on the shoulder of the northbound Interstate 15, endangering the motoring public," Simon said via an emailed statement.

Agents caught up with the suspect when his truck got caught in a dip in the dirt. The man jumped out and ran, but was captured quickly, Simon said.

Agents ran a record check on him and found he is a sex offender in Pinal County, AZ, wanted for parole violations. The man -- a U.S. citizen whose name was not released -- was booking into San DIego County jail for fleeing from an officer, Simon said.
