Update 7:52 p.m.:
A herd of sheep spotted on Interstate 215 at Clinton Keith Road in Murrieta quickly left the area but there was no word on where they went.
"By the time our officers got out there they were gone," said Erik, a California Highway Patrol dispatcher who declined to give his last name.
Sheep were milling about the roadside on the soutbound 215 Sunday, having broken through a fence, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The CHP reported on its incident log that about 100 of the ovines had broken through and several of them began meandering down the far right lane at Clinton Keith Road.
The incident was reported at 4:34 p.m., according to the CHP incident log.
There was no immediate word on whether the ramp would be closed in order to herd the sheep back.
