5 Things to Know in Murrieta: Aug. 29

Stay cool with these fun indoor activities.

1. It will be another hot one, according to the National Weather Service. Today is expected to be sunny with a high near 100. Tonight, partly cloudy skies with a low around 69.

REMINDER: Beat the heat by staying indoors and avoiding exercise or outdoor activities in the middle of the day. Wear loose fitting clothing, shield yourself from the sun and wear sunscreen. For those who need to cool down, the  at 41717 Juniper St. is a designated cool center for Murrieta. 

2. Children of active Military are invited to participate in a series of free sessions at the Boys & Girls Clubs of Southwest County Murrieta Clubhouse. Operation Project Learn will be held from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Mondays beginning Sept. 10 through Oct. 15. There is no membership fee for these sessions. Operation Project Learn will wrap up with free field trips to the Discovery Science Center and a college tour. The is located at 40550 California Oaks Road. 3. Here's what's for lunch today at elementary schools in the Murrieta Valley Unified School District: cheese bosco stick. Lunches are served with a fresh fruit/salad bar and a choice of juice or milk. Lunches average about 658 calories and 16.29 percent fat. To see middle and high school menus, click here.

4. Bingo lovers young and old can take in a weekly bingo game, hosted by Congregation B'nai Chaim, 29500 Via Princesa. Early bird games start at 6 p.m. each Wednesday, followed by regular games at 7 p.m. All members of the community are invited to take part. 5. The California Department of Education (CDE) announced on its Facebook page it is coordinating with the 2013 United States Senate Youth Program (USSYP) in California for the 51st annual competition sponsored by the William Randolph Hearst Foundation. All public and private high schools in the state are invited to nominate up to two of their outstanding seniors or juniors to participate. Four finalists, consisting of two delegates and a first alternate and second alternate, will be selected from the statewide applicants to be California’s USSYP representatives. The delegates will participate in a week of intensive study of the federal government as guests of the United States Senate from March 9–16, 2013, in Washington, D.C. The Foundation will pay all expenses for the delegates, including transportation, hotel, and meals. In addition, each of the delegates will receive a one-time $5,000 college scholarship from the Foundation. The deadline to apply is Sept. 28.
