California Gold: A Huell Howser Tribute

Lynda StarWriter shares her thoughts on Mr. Huell Howser's legacy.

All Photos Taken From the Internet

I’m bummed. One of my dreams was to meet Huell Howser. I think Mr. Howser was the ONLY television personality with whom I could relate. His broadcasts were sublimely fascinating, reporting on such things as bright, red, clay dirt in a northern region of California. Then there was his piece on antiquated spacecraft stored in the middle of the Mojave Desert. Another favorite was the segment on an outlying, manufacturing plant which exclusively uses recycled glass in creating hand-made, dinnerware, somewhere near Ukiah (http://www.calgold.com).

When I saw the venerable Mr. Howser conducting television interviews, I envied his sincere, gracious, unassuming, easy, breezy, reporting style.  I COMPLETELY understood his enthusiasm and the AWE he conveyed with his seemingly serendipitous, California Gold encounters. More importantly, I understood that each of his televised pieces were akin to GIFTS that he’d received from people desiring to share their wealth of information, of hospitality and food, of valuable time, of knowledge; all of whom granted tours and posed for photos (that’s like the icing on the reporting cake).

In turn, he respected and took care of those things, both as a professional journalist and as a trusted friend. In the land of annoying television and radio harangue, noisy contention (scripted or no) and reality shows reliant on someone else's woe and profane angst, Mr. Howser conveyed the simple, abundant joy available to anyone who wished to considerately share and to graciously receive such intangible delights. Such joy!

I aspire as a journalist and as a human being. Butterfly thoughts and California highway journeys do beckon, in large part because Mr. Howser paved an amiable, journalistic path. My condolences to those closest to Mr. Howser. I will miss him and his Southern drawl.

This couldn't possibly happen in a worse place, given the proximity to the freeway, high school, andRead More numerous businesses. UGH! The following is the press release from MPD: On 05-21-13, at 3:27 AM, the Murrieta Police Department received a call of a water-main break in the area of California Oaks Road and Monroe Avenue. Murrieta Police and Murrieta Fire Department initially responded to the scene and discovered a large sinkhole in the westbound lanes of California Oaks Road just west of Jackson Avenue. The sinkhole was approximately 4 feet deep and about 20 feet across. The hydraulic pressure from the water-main break appears to have created this sinkhole and damaged all the westbound lanes of California Oaks from approximately Jackson to Monroe. As a result, the westbound lanes of California Oaks between Jackson and Monroe will be closed for repair until further notice. Rancho Water Officials estimate that these repairs will take approximately one week to complete. When traveling in this area please expect delays and plan an alternate route in order to arrive at your destination on time.

Hey Maggie, I don't get a chance to talk to the help desk but the ad has gone away for now. I justRead More made a comment on one of Carl Petersons blogs and now the comment has disappeared and no trace of it in my comment history. Are comments still pending proof reading before they post? Was it taken down by the blog author? I realize you guys have made a lot of changes so I'm still not sure if there are bugs being worked out or if some thing else is going on. Any help would be appreciated.
