The Riverside County Department of Public Health has clarified some information regarding the recent death of a child due to complications related to whopping cough.

According to the Riverside County Department of Public Health, the 2- month-old tot had not been vaccinated for whooping cough, also known as pertussis, nor had the infant's mother received a booster shot while she was pregnant.

The child was not identified, though county health department Communicable Diseases Specialist Barbara Cole confirmed the infant was from the southwest county area.

Jeff, not sure where the fear you keep obsessing comes from.. if you're fearful of my posts, don't read them.
ChrisG February 10, 2014 at 05:57 PM
@kristin, because being vaccinated is not 100% protection. Also, sick people are more susceptible to more than one disease because they have weakened immune systems. My concern is more about the health and safety of my family members than yours. So my question remains unanswered. Does your right to not inoculate your kids make my kids unsafer? If it does not then I really don't care what you choose for your children. Does that make sense?
kristin c February 10, 2014 at 06:03 PM
Brenda dear, you're the one with all the assumptions.. the point I was trying to make is there are valid reasons people don't want to vaccinate their kids. Also others seem to think unvaccinated kids spread disease.. but if their kids are vaccinated then what's to sorry about? And again , my kids are vaccinated and doing just fine. The only reason I commented was because of the "misinformed" people bashing those who don't vaccinate.
kristin c February 10, 2014 at 06:20 PM
Chris, it does and I know the argument everybody is trying to make . My point is exactly what you just said... vaccines aren't 100% effective. It gives folks a false sense of security because they assume their child is safe if vaccinated. I think our kids are as safe as the vaccines are effective.
Jeff Kleiner February 10, 2014 at 06:54 PM
They can't transfer it unless they were close to someone who has it and then contact you. Thats why I am for vaccinations....for everyone..I thought that point was clear?
Jeff Kleiner February 10, 2014 at 06:57 PM
Kristin Cheney you know its not fear of you I'm talking about. It's your fear of Obama, Obamacare, the government, calling me a phys co if I knew your name...well I'm proving to you I don't care about your name......you walk around afraid of non-existent things, like most conservatives.
Jeff Kleiner February 10, 2014 at 06:59 PM
kristin, your argument goes in circles and doesn't answer Chris' question. Get you kids vaccinated....just in case it works.
Jeff Kleiner February 10, 2014 at 07:02 PM
Answer to ChrisG's question "Should my inoculated child be exposed to your non-inoculated child in taxpayer funded public schools?" NO! PERIOD! THATS WHY THE GOVERNMENT HAS TO BE INVOLVED TO MAKE SURE ALL KIDS ARE SAFE.
southernbelle February 11, 2014 at 02:13 PM
Jeff-- the difference here is that tobacco products are regulated and not legal to sell to minors. There is also extensive product awareness. Everyone knows they are dangerous and use the product informed. That's not the case with Aspartame! Not many know the dangers. Not many know there should be small doses. And NO--you do not see warnings on aspartame products like you do tobacco products. Kids are being stuffed with sugar-free, diet, low calorie crap all day long!! Why? Because our FDA ALLOWS and APPROVES dangerous food items. WHY? Why would these chemicals be approved if they are harmful to children and so widespread without any warnings or education to the public? The only time a person is educated is when they hop on the internet and start looking around for themselves. Anyway-- I also think you're extremely wrong regarding drug companies who make and distribute vaccines--not the government. I'd actually like to see statistics NOT done by drug companies showing how many documented cases of some of these diseases still exist. Is polio still around? I can see measles and mumps and chicken pox- but what about some of the others? it'd be interesting to see. I'm not interested enough to any more time on this though. All I know is I do appreciate having the Government and I don't fear or despise it. I'm personally grateful it is pin place and think we are better off because of a government. But I certainly don't agree with everything, and I'm not naive to think there isn't corruption or deceit in certain entities of it. We are a greedy nation and that greed reaches far and wide. My only defense is to inform myself on things that affect me and my family. And I'm not FEARful of these things--I'm disgusted and proactive.
ChrisG February 11, 2014 at 02:35 PM
@belle, well put. especially the last few sentences.
Jeff Kleiner February 11, 2014 at 03:44 PM
Belle, I don't agree with everything our Government does and believe me, having a nurse for a wife I am well informed. I think most middle class Americans do their own research. I also know, that parents only control the intake of their children until they have cash in their pocket and a friend with a car. So you keep drugs and products you dislike for the first 16 years of their lives. Once making their own decisions, they leave the house and experiment and want to know all about the things you kept from them.....AGREED? The products you talk about are not losing money because of a fear from aspartame. Neither does the warning label on tobacco products reduce usage. Odds are your children will use both products sometime in their lifetime. The same goes for the obedient child who gets someone pregnant or becomes pregnant. I AGREE, fraud and corruption dominates the world and our government. NO DOUBT. But that is with everything in life.......we chose what is best for us, after researching and I then trust the FDA, the police and fire and the established laws of America and the government falls in that barrel.

Here is a link to an article in LA Times online that shows in graphics the damage the spread of preventable diseases that the anti-vaccine movement has caused. http://www.latimes.com/business/hiltzik/la-fi-mh-antivaccination-movement-20140120,0,5576371.story#axzz2t4mmB24V

thanks Lyn but, I rarely take anything the CFR puts their stamp on as an intelligent source for anything. Here--try this: Anne Schuchat, MD, director of CDC's National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases, told reporters....."It does NOT appear that anti-vaccination sentiment among parents has contributed to either the national rise in cases or the Washington State epidemic", she says. http://children.webmd.com/news/20120719/cdc-whooping-cough-h... An investigation by California doctors has revealed that the state's latest outbreak of whooping cough centered around children who had already received the whooping cough vaccine, Reuters reports. The study, led by infectious disease specialist Dr. David Witt, was initiated after an unusually large number of whooping cough cases were admitted to Kaiser Permanente Hospital in San Rafael, California in 2010. After examining the records of juvenile whooping cough patients over an 8-month period, the doctors discovered that 81 percent of patients had received the full series of whooping cough shots, and 11 percent had received only some of the shots. The remaining 8 percent had not received any immunizations for whooping cough. "What was very surprising was the majority of cases were in fully vaccinated children," Witt (Dr. David Witt, an infectious disease specialist) said. "That's what started catching our attention." http://digitaljournal.com/article/323187#ixzz28oOajodX Here's another:Whooping Cough Outbreak Grows In Weld County - CBS Denver Health officials in Weld County have confirmed 10 cases of whooping cough at the school. The University Middle School Nurse Jane Weber said she’s never seen a whooping cough outbreak in her 25-year career. “It is a bit of a mystery," said Weber. “All of the students involved in this outbreak we’re monitoring are fully immunized so that is puzzling because I would not expect to have that happen." http://denver.cbslocal.com/2012/05/10/whooping-cough-outbrea... Whooping Cough Alert On Long Island - - Whooping Cough Outbreak Spreads On Long Island; More Than 200 Cases Reported The majority of the students who have been infected with whooping cough had been immunized, which health officials said may account for their milder illness. http://newyork.cbslocal.com/2011/11/29/whooping-cough-alert-...

one more: "The DTaP vaccine... is 59-89% effective in preventing pertussis [whooping cough]." Source: http://www.immunizationinfo.org/vaccines/pertussis-whooping-cough#effectiveness-of-the-vaccine "CDC's current estimate is that Tdap vaccination protects against whooping cough in about 7 out of 10 people who receive it." Source: http://www.cdc.gov/vaccines/adults/rec-vac/pregnant/whooping-cough/vacc-effectiveness.html Effectiveness studies results can and most likely are skewed to gain FDA approval. Just like anything else that passes through FDA. These studies NEVER involve controlled exposure to a disease during the research phase. I.e., they do not administer the vaccine, then expose the vaccinated person to an aerosol containing live bacteria or virus. Because of this sort of skewing--many parents are choosing not to vaccinate because some feel the side affects is the lesser of two evils. How much of this is hype? Let's take a look at the MASS amounts of ritalin shoved down our kids throats in the 1970-2000! Take a look around--I'll be 7 of 10 ppl we know take some sort of anti-depressant/anxiety med! Let's look at the paid INCENTIVES doctors get for prescribing certain brands of meds!!! These incentives are blatant and obvious when you watch the prescription med trends-- one year everyone is on Lexapro. The next everyone takes Zoloft. Then, Effixer is the hot ticket. Ever wonder why docs are so quick to pass out Oxycontin like gum balls?!!! They aren't trying to create random drug addicts, as much as they are trying to get their payouts geared to a particular brand of drug. Keep them coming back so she/he can drive a nicer car! It's sickening!!! Drug companies that hype about flu shots and random vaccines are lining their pockets as well. ps--again--I vaccinated my kids. I felt it was the lesser of 2 evils for my family. I took the chance and I'm glad I have. Buyt that doesn't mean I don't understand or respect another's choice to not. I FULLY understand it. I vaccinated OUT OF FEAR. However--we do not, have not ever gotten a flu shot. My hubby does--he HAS to in his line of work. Guess who gets the flu EVERY year…and guess who doesn't!!! …IN HOME studies prove the FLU shot has not been 100% effective. Also, non-vaccinated parties were not effected by the illness. source: MOM (that's me). and that's exactly why we don't/won't get it. eat healthy, exercise--best medicine a body can have!
Antonio February 12, 2014 at 11:36 AM
The flu vaccine each year is designed to be effective against the most prevalent strains of flu. There are hundreds of smaller anticipated strains. Your husband could have caught one or more of the lesser strains. We can't make public health policy on anecdotal evidence but on statistical probability and proven causality. I trust the public health professionals to advise us. I support mandatory immunizations. Boring but effective.
ChrisG February 12, 2014 at 11:49 AM
I too received mandatory flu shots for 20+ years with mixed results. The problem with basing whether to immunize for other disease on flu shot results goes beyond the limited strain the flu vaccine is designed to protect you from as Lyn states. You also have to realize that type of vaccine is only effective up to 6-8 weeks after you receive the shot.
ChrisG February 12, 2014 at 11:58 AM
That being said, and I don't want to seem crass, I care little how parents raise their children as long is does not negatively impact my family. If you feel vaccines are more of a threat to your children than the protection they provide from the disease that is your prerogative. Unless, your non-vaccinated child poses a high health risk to mine. After all, moms can kill their children before birth, why shouldn't they be able to afterwards?
Joseph Morabito February 12, 2014 at 12:10 PM
Chris... I love the old "Kill their children" before they're born hoopla (I'm surprised you didn't say "murder"). Let's not pause there... let's up the ante to "killing their unborn college grads" while we're strolling through LaLa Land. But I agree... I don't care if parents ruin their kids lives... be it lack of inoculations or feeding them fast food. It isn't my concern.
southernbelle February 12, 2014 at 12:15 PM
Jeff, I'm sorry but no, I don't agree. "Most" middle class americans do not do research, or care much. Evidence is the enormous epidemic of childhood obesity, depression/disorders, sickness, and let's look at the all around sales success of the fast food market, and other junk providers. All one has to do is look at the S&P 500 to see who's running America as far as food and beverage (and drugs!). If "most" did research and understood how dangerous aspartame and other toxic ingredients are to our children and selves--these would not be the companies in the lead, capitalizing America. This is one area of interest I have immersed myself into over the past 5 yrs. It started with the death of my sister, her husband 6 months later, my younger sis a year later diagnosed Leukemia--and all living in the same home. During that same time my son was having severe ADD symptoms, and I was experiencing vision problems. In both our homes, we were drinking sweet tea, nonfat yogurt, chewing sugarless gum, and making what we THOUGHT were healthy choices to choose "sugar-free, 0 calorie, non-fat, low calorie, diet, etc" products. My search began because my two sisters and their husbands shared a home. With the 2 semi-simultaneous deaths, and then the following cancer diagnosis (with NO history in family)--something seemed fishy to me. The only 2 not ill were my youngest sis's husband and child. Because of severe allergies in the child, and dislike of low caloric foods in her husband---those 2 never ingested aspartame. In my home- I found out it was in much of the foods I ate and purchased AND fed to my children. Aspartame affects us neurologically. Yes, it is a build up over time. Unless the product is heated above 80f. It quickly advances into toxic chemicals under heat conditions. I can honestly testify that after 4 months aspartame free-my vision returned to normal 100%! So no, most ppl do not know--I tell ppl often and they have not heard anything. If "most" knew about the foods we eat; aspartame, GMO's, irradiation, hydrogenated oils, palm oil, high fructose corn syrup, MSG, and other blends of these toxic chemicals-- our marketplace wouldn't look like it does with highly processed FAKE food at the top of the chain. It is no fricken wonder why there is so much childhood disease, youth disorders, young adult/adult depressions and anxiety--people snapping, etc. Our brains are being polluted y the crap the food industry gets post the FDA, in the name of greed. it is foolish to trust the FDA.
ChrisG February 12, 2014 at 12:24 PM
@JM, to clarify, I really do not care much whether or not one decides to kill their children. And not just before birth. I think parents should be able to 'take care' of their little rascals up to the age of emancipation as long as they are not physically or mentally abusive. I realize this is an extreme position.
Joseph Morabito February 12, 2014 at 12:25 PM
Belle, tl;dr --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- but from what I scanned, I can tell that I agree with your assessment that most people do NOT research anything when it comes to nutrition. I have to enjoy your fear of GMOs. Every generation has to have a boogeyman... congrats, you've found yours.
Joseph Morabito February 12, 2014 at 12:33 PM
Chris, I basically agree... it was well illustrated in a Christopher Titus routine a couple of years ago when he suggested allowing 60th trimester abortions. I just laugh when people use the term "children" when speaking of missed periods. It must really make god sad to know of all the murdered babies/children when a sperm is killed off through natural selection. I bet heaven is filled with all those tadpoles. XD
southernbelle February 12, 2014 at 01:30 PM
@JoM--I very much dislike your comments to me. I think for my own peace of mind--I'm going to abstain from attempting to discuss anything with you. I can already see you are a complete lost cause. I personally think you're a complete ass, irrelevant, and uninformed on several topics you visit where you spew nothing but a toxic, bitter, waste of words. Should you ever decide to develop your brain and say something with even a hint of relevance behind it, I might reconsider conversing.consider it an honor. My free-time is precious to me, and I prefer spending energy on people who are capable of having an actual conversation. go play with yourself in the bathroom until you discover your manhood and can behave as such. troll me (and others) all you want, it defines your character not mine. *i can't hear you….lalalalala*

southernbelle, your website (collective evolution?)references are for crackpots . Which is what you are all about. Go back to the Dark Ages. Your ignorance is incredible and dangerous.
southernbelle February 12, 2014 at 10:39 PM
the dark ages--oh, you mean like where you get all your antiquated, unoriginal insults? I was asked to give sources- I did. Too bad for you they aren't from any left nut baby killers so you can put your personal stamp of approval on them, mr. ego. You don't like them-do your own damn homework. Personally I could give a hoot if you want to stuff your face with these GMO, highly processed, fake food items so the murderous agenda you obviously support can be funded through the sweet little faces of young girls who are completely clueless about what's going on. I just think it's wrong on every level for them to use children so I was just letting everyone know about it. *oooooh-danger-hysteria-the sky is falling!!!!* smh At least I supported my comments. All you and you're little buddy have is your "indignant doubt." If I'm wrong- serve it up. I'm not to proud to apologize. But Srsly- stop being a societal puppet-- the ignorance lies in doubting the possibility of an American Corp lining the pockets of politicians and other entities in order to push a political agenda!! From the HUNDREDS of articles I've looked over, GSUSA just took it a step further and enlisted sweet little girls to do their dirty work.
southernbelle February 12, 2014 at 10:46 PM
crap--I AM a crackpot!! hahahahahahahaha wrong forum. hahahahaha that's funny well- I can at least say this Lyn--how is the "Center for Disease Control," "Denver CBS," and "WebMD" not reputable but crackpot sites??
