Water District Makes Progress on California Oaks Sinkhole Repairs

The work is not done yet, however, a Rancho California Water District representative said Friday.

It will be more than a week before traffic returns to normal on California Oaks Road following the May 21 discovery of a large sinkhole.

Road work was scheduled to resume Tuesday on the stretch of California Oaks between Monroe and Jackson avenues, according to a spokeswoman for Rancho California Water District.

Base paving took place Friday on the westbound lanes between Jackson and Monroe avenues, where the 4-foot-deep, 20-foot-wide sinkhole was discovered early May 21, Rancho Water's Meggan Valencia told Patch Friday afternoon.

The hydraulic pressure from a water-main break created the sinkhole.

“Today they were still doing work but one westbound lane was open,” Valencia told Patch Friday afternoon.

All westbound lanes were scheduled to be re-opened by the end of the day Friday and remain open until Tuesday night, according to Valencia.

At 7 p.m Tuesday night, motorists were advised that Monroe Avenue north of California Oaks will be closed as crews grind and pave the intersection of the two streets as well as a portion of an eastbound lane.

Further traffic impacts were expected during daytime hours on Wednesday, May 29 and Thursday, May 30 when crews are scheduled to cap, pave and stripe both the westbound and eastbound lanes of California Oaks between Jackson and Monroe, including the Monroe intersection.

Motorists can expect one lane to be closed in each direction May 29-30, Valencia said.

Then if all goes as planned, signal loops will be replaced after 8 p.m. on Monday, June 3, she said.
