Traffic Delays Continue Near Cal Oaks Sinkhole

Rancho California Water District is estimating that a sinkhole on California Oaks Road in Murrieta will be repaired by the end of the day Thursday.

Traffic delays near a sinkhole on California Oaks Road are expected to continue until at least Thursday, a water district official said.

Authorities discovered the sinkhole at around 3:30 a.m. Tuesday on westbound California Oaks between Jackson and Monroe Avenues. The hydraulic pressure from a water-main break created the sinkhole, damaging much of the westbound side of the street.

Consequently, the lanes near the sinkhole were closed all of Tuesday while crews started their repairs.

As of Wednesday morning, Rancho California Water District Spokeswoman Meggan Valencia said there is one westbound lane open between Jackson and Monroe.

"There are still traffic impacts," Valenica said.

Rancho California Water District is estimating that repairs will be completed by the end of the day Thursday, Valencia told Patch. At that point, all lanes would be reopened, she said.

As for customers in the Target shopping center and an apartment complex on Monroe who lost water service when the main line burst, Valencia said service was restored at about 6:30 p.m. Tuesday.
