UPDATE: Rig Carrying Nuclear Waste Makes Way up I-15 North

The truck, carrying low-level radioactive waste, is only permitted to travel at night. Reports are that the truck may travel though Murrieta on Interstate 215.

UPDATE 12:45 a.m. Aug. 3:

A rig carrying radioactive waste from the San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station stalled traffic on Interstate 15 north near Highway 395 late Tuesday, a motorist told Patch.

The rig is supposed to exit the interstate in Temecula because its height will not allow it to pass under freeway bridges through the area.

It was heavily guarded by California Highway Patrol, according to the motorist. The exact route is not begin publicized, and the rig is only allowed to travel at night.

A 400-foot-long big rig hauling a radioactive steam generator to Utah--traveling through Southwest Riverside County on its way--had its first hiccup in its route early Monday.

It was parked for the day alongside a North San Diego County thoroughfare Monday, blocking a lane and drawing curious passers-by.

The massive truck pulled over about 3 a.m. on the eastbound side of Oceanside Boulevard, just east of El Camino Real, according to police.

The truck, which is carrying the generator from the San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station, was parked in that location because it is only allowed to travel at night and there wasn't enough time to get to the next checkpoint before daybreak, Oceanside police Lt. Leonard Mata said.

The rig, which is being escorted by the California Highway Patrol, is slated to get under way again about 9 p.m., the lieutenant said.

The North County Times reported that the truck will travel through Temecula, exiting Interstate 15 onto Temecula Parkway, taking Margarita Road to Winchester Road.

The route will take the truck onto Interstate 215 through Murrieta, The Press-Enterprise reported, but if it will use Murrieta Hot Springs Road to get there was unclear.
