Quarter Auction Will Benefit Local Marines

Families of the 1st Marine Division will hold a quarter auction to fund care packages that will go to Marines in Afghanistan.

Murrieta residents can help Marines one quarter at a time.

Families of the 1st Marine Division will hold a at 12 p.m., Oct. 22 at the , 26799 Ynez Road. The auction paddle will cost $5.

The efforts will help fund care packages for soon-to-be deployed Marines, said event organizer Jennifer van Boxtel.

By Christmas, she hopes more than 75 care packages make their way to Marines in Afghanistan.

"They all look forward to these care packages. It's going to be tough and sad for a lot of them missing their families," she said. "We're hoping to bring them a little happiness for the holidays even if it's just wrapped in a box."

Participants will use quarters to bid on items ranging from household goods to jewelry.

The organizers are accepting donations for the packages that include personal hygiene product and treats.

"We are happy with anything," she said. "We're super excited."

Those interested in participating, donating or signing up as a vendor at the event can call Jennifer at 951-894-6777. Participants should bring collapsible chairs, she said.
