Quake Near Hemet Shakes Murrieta

A 3.7 earthquake shakes Murrieta and nearby cities.

A magnitude 3.7 earthquake shook Murrieta at 9:30 a.m. today.

The epicenter was in the San Jacinto mountains about 9 miles east of Hemet and 7 miles west of Idyllwild, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

It was felt as a strong jolt 20 miles east in Palm Springs. Murrieta residents, along with people from Riverside, Coachella and Carlsbad, reported feeling it to USGS.

The quake is the latest in a series of eight that shook the area in the last week, including one magnitude 1.5 that struck Friday and centered about 4 miles northwest of Anza. None of the quakes had a magnitude greater than 2.0.
