Local Students Intern, Travel to D.C. As Part of Bank of America Program

Vista Murrieta senior Austin Harcarik of Temecula and recent Murrieta Mesa graduate Sha Mia Williams of Murrieta among five Inland Empire students selected as 2013 Bank of America Student Leaders.

Two Murrieta students recently returned from a weeklong summit in Washington, D.C. and are spending their summers interning for local nonprofits as part of the 2013 Bank of America Student Leaders Program.

Austin Harcarik, of Temecula, a soon-to-be senior at Vista Murrieta High School, and Sha Mia Williams, a recent graduate of Murrieta Mesa High School, were chosen as two of 225 students from across the nation to take part in the program, according to a news release from Bank of America.

Both were awarded eight-week paid internships as part of the program. Austin is interning at Boys and Girls Clubs of Southwest County and Sha Mia is interning at Michelle’s Place.

In addition, they attended the Bank of America Student Leadership Summit in Washington, D.C., from July 8-13. Summit activities included a service learning project and a series of interactive workshops, including Capitol Hill briefings and sessions on financial education and leadership development skills.

Austin was chosen as a 2013 participant because of his accomplishments throughout his high school career so far, including being president of the Hospice of the Valleys Volunteer Club, a member of the National Honor Society, and serving as a tutor to elementary, middle and high school students.

Likewise, Sha Mia was chosen because of her accomplishments so far, including participating as a youth leader for the SMURFs, a group leader for the Rock Church Youth Group and volunteering at the Salvation Army.

Austin and Sha Mia join three others from the Inland Empire region selected as Bank of America student leaders this year.

Domenique Chavers, who attends Bloomington High School in Fontana, is interning at Boys and Girls Clubs Fontana this summer.

Kieu-My Nguyen, a student at Colton High School in Colton, is interning at Habitat for Humanity Riverside.

Christie Matthews of Indio is spending his internship at FIND Food Bank. He attends Desert Christian Academy.

“Despite gains in the overall job market, it is teens that still have the highest unemployment rate with one out of every seven young people not being in school or working. In response to this pressing issue, Bank of America created its Student Leaders Program in 2004 to offer our nation’s high school students an opportunity to participate in a leadership program at their local community nonprofit,” Bank of America stated.
