Floyd Landis Under Investigation for Possible Fraud

A federal grand jury is investigating cyclist Floyd Landis on possible mail and wire fraud tied to the now-defunct Floyd Fairness Fund.

Professional cyclist and former Murrieta resident Floyd Landis may be facing yet another legal battle.

Landis is under investigation by a federal grand jury in San Diego on possible wire and mail fraud, U.T. San Diego reported.

The fraud investigation centers around a defense fund set up when allegations surfaced that he was doping when he won the 2006 Tour de France.

The Floyd Fairness Fund was used to collect donations for his legal fees, the newspaper reported, but was not set up as a nonprofit organization. Nearly $1 million was brought in through town hall meetings, a website and other donations.

Landis confirmed with the newspaper that he had received a letter from the U.S. Attorney's office regarding the fraud investigation.
