A major daily newspaper that has covered southwest Riverside County cities for decades may be permanently halting its presses, Patch has learned.

The Californian newspaper is reportedly ceasing operations by the end of Tuesday, according to Twitter messages posted by employees.

“Today was the last day of The Californian newspaper. Thank you for all your support through the years,” wrote CalVarsity, the newspaper’s sports department, on Twitter.

“Well folks, that's it for The Californian and the Californian's Go! sections!” posted another employee.

The newspaper and its counterpart, North County Times, were purchased in September 2011 by U-T San Diego.

A spokesperson for U-T San Diego could not immediately be reached Tuesday, and a call to The Californian’s Temecula office went to voicemail.

The Californian and North County Times were previously owned by Lee Enterprises, Inc.

This is a developing story; stay with Patch in the event more information is gathered.
