Skyrocketing California Gas Prices Blamed On Fire, Experts Warn

The fire will cause West Coast pump prices to soon average more than $4 a gallon, according to some.

The latest spike in gas prices is being blamed on a fire at a Richmond, Calif.-based Chevron oil refinery.

The average price of a gallon of gasoline in Inland Southern California, including Murrieta, is 6.7 cents more than one week ago, 19.1 cents greater than one month ago and 10.1 cents above what it was one year ago, and analysts are predicting more steep price increases due to the Chevron fire.

The fire broke out Monday and was caused by a leak at the refinery, according to The Associated Press. The Richmond refinery is located about 10 miles northwest of San Francisco and produces about 150,000 barrels of gasoline a day — or 16 percent of the region's daily gasoline consumption of 963,000 barrels, Tom Kloza, chief oil analyst at Oil Price Information Service, told The Associated Press.

The fire, Kloza said, will cause West Coast pump prices to soon average more than $4 a gallon.

The average price of a gallon of self-serve regular gasoline in the Inland Empire rose Wednesday for the 26th time in 27 days, increasing 1.5 cents to $3.873 -- its highest amount since June 21.

Chevron spokesman Lloyd Avram told The Associated Press he did not know when the Richmond refinery could be restarted and he declined to comment on how the shutdown might impact the gasoline market.

Analyst Patrick DeHaan of the website GasBuddy.com is warning West Coast motorists.

"Spot prices have already increased by as much as 30 cents per gallon in some West Coast markets and that's before the refinery damage has been fully assessed," DeHaan said.

This couldn't possibly happen in a worse place, given the proximity to the freeway, high school, andRead More numerous businesses. UGH! The following is the press release from MPD: On 05-21-13, at 3:27 AM, the Murrieta Police Department received a call of a water-main break in the area of California Oaks Road and Monroe Avenue. Murrieta Police and Murrieta Fire Department initially responded to the scene and discovered a large sinkhole in the westbound lanes of California Oaks Road just west of Jackson Avenue. The sinkhole was approximately 4 feet deep and about 20 feet across. The hydraulic pressure from the water-main break appears to have created this sinkhole and damaged all the westbound lanes of California Oaks from approximately Jackson to Monroe. As a result, the westbound lanes of California Oaks between Jackson and Monroe will be closed for repair until further notice. Rancho Water Officials estimate that these repairs will take approximately one week to complete. When traveling in this area please expect delays and plan an alternate route in order to arrive at your destination on time.

Hey Maggie, I don't get a chance to talk to the help desk but the ad has gone away for now. I justRead More made a comment on one of Carl Petersons blogs and now the comment has disappeared and no trace of it in my comment history. Are comments still pending proof reading before they post? Was it taken down by the blog author? I realize you guys have made a lot of changes so I'm still not sure if there are bugs being worked out or if some thing else is going on. Any help would be appreciated.
