The Many Faces Of Strangers

The Many Faces Of Strangers - Many times when people without special needs children find out about ours a strange look comes over their face. First surprise, as if they had never thought it possible. Give them a moment here, they are processing that your life is very different from theirs. Next is confusion, they have no idea what to say and are searching their brains for just the right words.  Let them off the hook a little and tell them it is ok to ask questions. Finally, the inevitable look of pity. The most hated look of all that we face. The look that in essence says "I am so sorry for your horrible life" But I have found this is the greatest moment of them all and if we can get past the discomfort of it we can spread some real education and love for all children with special needs.  I have taken to saying, "Don't be sorry I have a wonderful life and Lillian's autism is just a very small part of the incredible person that she is. We know she is going to do great things". Then I move on to a different subject and let them see that my child and I have many awesome things to share with the world and she is not defined by her disability.  God has made us to be champions for our special children, he has sent us to pave the way for not just acceptance but for our children to take there rightful place in this world.  He sees them as whole and perfect and it is up to us to teach the world to see the same.  Be Blessed My Friends
