Hey Doctors Listen Up!

OK doctors, nurses and medical personnel, we moms kind of know what we are talking about. We may not have the fancy medical degree but we know our children. We know the difference between when they are faking it and really hurt and we wouldn't be sitting here in your office unless it was serious. When I initially got Lilly diagnosed with Autism at 18 months I took her ba...ck to her pediatrician who told me "I don't really know anything about Autism, we can learn together". I promptly changed doctors. It taught me a valuable lesson, I am the expert on Lilly, I know when something is just not right and it is up to me to relay that to the medical professionals. It is frustrating when they don't take me seriously but I don't think they realize just how much I know about Lilly's autism. So when they talk to me like I am completely uneducated it can get under my skin. I have learned over time to not let this bother me, they just don't know me yet, but they will. They always learn I want to partner with them for the good of my child, that we work best when we work together. That I am open to there ideas and suggestions as long as they are willing to listen to my concerns. Finding a doctor who is willing to make you a partner in your child's healing is a gift, a relationship that we must appreciate and foster. It is a relationship that could last for years to come.
