More Earthquakes Strike Riverside County On New Year's Eve

Five earthquakes rattle the region.

UPDATED: For the second straight day, earthquake activity was reported in Riverside County today.

A temblor with a magnitude of 3.1 hit the region at 1:21 a.m. Tuesday at a depth of 5 miles, its epicenter 14 miles southwest of La Quinta and 16 miles south-southwest of Palm Desert and Rancho Mirage.

An earthquake with a magnitude of 3.3 rocked the mountains south of the Coachella Valley at 10:33 a.m. Monday and one with a 3.7 magnitude struck the Idyllwild area at 3:44 p.m.

Today's quake in the desert was not the only one to strike the region on New Year's Eve. A magnitude 3.0 hit Alberto Oviedo Mota, Mexico shortly after midnight. The area is located about 35 miles southeast of Mexicali, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. A second magnitude 3.1 quake struck the region again shortly after 4:30 a.m.
