Christmas Tree Pick-Up Schedule Announced by Waste Management

City of Murrieta residents may recycle their trees during the first two weeks following Christmas by placing them at the curb.

When the presents have been opened and the ornaments packed away for next year, Waste Management of the Inland Empire invites Murrieta residents to recycle their Christmas trees.

“Christmas trees can do more than brighten children’s hearts this holiday season,” said Julie Reyes of WasteManagement. “Trees can be recycled and given back to nature in the form of mulch.”

City of Murrieta residents may recycle their trees during the first two weeks following Christmas on customers’ scheduled collection day from Dec. 30 through Jan. 10, according to a news release. Trees will be collected at the curb and may be picked-up by special bed trucks.

For the weeks of Dec. 23 and Dec. 30, collection will be delayed one day for customers normally serviced Wednesday through Friday.

Residents are asked to remove decorations, including tinsel, lights, ornaments and tree stands from their tree. In addition, trees higher than 5 feet must be cut in half. Residents are reminded that flocked trees can not be recycled. They will be collected by the trash collector.

Those who live in Menifee and Wildomar, as well as unincorporated communities of Riverside County serviced by Waste Management, may place their trees inside their green waste cart container.

For the creative recycler, Waste Management offers these other ideas for repurposing trees:

  • Bird feeders: Place the Christmas tree in the garden or backyard and use it as a bird feeder and sanctuary. Fresh orange slices or strung popcorn will attract the birds and they can sit in the branches for shelter.
  • Mulch: A Christmas tree is biodegradable; its branches can be removed, chipped, and used as mulch in the garden.
  • Living, rooted trees:  Plant it in your yard after Christmas.
