5K Fun Run, Breakfast, Celebrate Mormon Pioneers

Pioneer Day 5K Fun Run & Breakfast was held Saturday.

It was a balmy day for the 200 or so participants that competed in a 5K and one-mile race in Murrieta Saturday morning.

Temperatures were in the low 60's and a thick cloud cover kept the summer sun from making runners and spectators uncomfortable.

Pioneer Day is an official holiday for residents and businesses in the state of Utah and is celebrated annually on July 24, unless that day falls on a Sunday.

The holiday commemorates the entry of Brigham Young and the Mormon pioneers into the Salt Lake Valley July 24, 1847.

Outside Utah, Pioneer Day is also celebrated, in different ways, by members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

The local Murrieta California Stake has celebrated in various ways over the years.

This year, members and friends from the community joined the celebration with a 5K Fun Run, a one-mile children's race, a U.S. flag-raising ceremony, a pancake breakfast, and assorted children's games.

The event was held at the LDS Washington Avenue property in Murrieta.

Participation was free.

Following the Adult/Youth run, which began at 7:45 a.m., a one-mile Kid's Run was held.

The start and finish line for the race was the Washington Building property, across from Ralphs.

The course meandered around streets in that part of the city, with runners staying on the sidewalks and dirt trails of the neighborhoods.

Following the races, everyone was treated to a free breakfast.  There was also a flag ceremony conducted by Troop 734, and an awards ceremony.

Special awards were given to the top three finishers in each event, male and female.

Morgan Cubete, the overall winner of the 5K race, finished with a time of 19:49.

He commented that he liked the course and "looks forward to more stiff competition next year."

Dave Rigby expressed gratitude for all the volunteers.

Kevin Vincent commented on the heritage of many Murrieta residents, who have ancestors who crossed the plains during the mid-1800's.
