Checkpoint, Pumpkin Carver Sought, More Warm Temps

Happy Friday! Here are five things to know Aug. 16 in Murrieta, Calif.

1. Don’t put away your summer wardrobe just yet! The high temperature should be around 97 degrees Friday in Murrieta, 97 on Saturday and 94 on Sunday, according to the National Weather Service. Overnight lows will be in the low 60s. Winds gusts as high as 20 mph are possible.

2. Murrieta police are conducting a DUI/driver’s license checkpoint between 7:30 tonight and 2:30 a.m. Saturday at an undisclosed location within the city. Motorists should prepare to be briefly detained while officers check for impaired and/or unlicensed drivers. A Temecula police checkpoint is also being held—from 9 p.m. to 3 a.m.—at an undisclosed location within Temecula city limits.

3. Here’s what’s for lunch today at elementary schools in the Murrieta Valley Unified School District: mac and cheese. Lunches average 639 calories and 28.64 percent fat, and are served with a fruit and salad bar, juice or milk. To view middle and high school menus, click here.

5. The average price of a gallon of self-serve regular gasoline in the Inland Empire dropped Thursday to its lowest amount since May 6, decreasing 1.5 cents to $3.892, according to figures from the AAA and Oil Price Information Service. That is 6.7 cents less than one week ago in Riverside and San Bernardino counties, 15.2 cents lower than one month ago and 19.4 cents below what it was one year ago.

Savers thrift store in Murrieta is holding its first annual Block Party Donation Drive in honor of back-to-school, according to an emailed announcement. The event is from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 17 and will feature contests, games, and prizes, free face-painting and a chance to enter to win a bicycle. The store encourages all attendees to bring a donation, which supports their nonprofit partner, Hope Services. The store is located at 25125 Madison Avenue, Suite 102, Murrieta.
