Back to School, Lunch With Friends, Gas Prices: Today in Murrieta

Five things to know Aug. 14 in Murrieta, Calif.

1. Wednesday brings the sun and a high temperature of 96 degrees in Murrieta. The overnight low will be around 61, with winds picking up in the afternoon and evening hours.

2. It's back to school today for students in the Murrieta Valley Unified School District, so allow extra time for morning and afternoon travel near school campuses. Here's what's for lunch at elementary schools: orange chicken and brown rice. Lunches average 639 calories and 28.64 percent fat, and are served with a fruit and salad bar, juice or milk. 3. Join a growing group for Murrieta Lunch With Friends, which happens every Wednesday between noon and 1:30 p.m. at different establishments in an effort to support local businesses. This week's lunch is at Honeycutt Farms, 40477 Murrieta Hot Springs Road. Guests are encouraged to bring a friend, plus a door prize to promote their business.

4. This evening's regularly scheduled Murrieta Planning Commission has been canceled.Instead, commissioners will meet with City Council for a “chip chat” at 6 p.m. at City Hall. Council will express its appreciation for the volunteer commissioners, while discussing mutual goals, expectations, current items and future plans.

5. The average price of a gallon of self-serve regular gasoline in the Inland Empire dropped Tuesday to its lowest amount since May 7, decreasing eight-tenths of a cent to $3.919. The average price in Riverside and San Bernardino counties has fallen for 14 consecutive days and 20 of the past 21, according to figures from the AAA and Oil Price Information Service. It is 5.8 cents less than one week ago, 11 cents lower than one month ago and 14.9 cents below what it was one year ago.
