The Benefits of Adopting a Senior Dog

Old dogs rule! The benefits of adopting an older canine, and tips for caring for him.

The benefits of adopting an older dog are many.

Senior dogs are excellent companions for people of all ages and are an especially great match for those in their golden years. Studies show that older people with pets are happier, healthier and tend to live longer.

But an older dog can make a good companion for anyone who doesn’t have the energy to deal with a puppy. Senior canines often have training and are not as likely to pee on the carpet or chew new shoes!

That’s not to say senior dogs can’t learn new tricks. Training is still possible, no matter a dog’s age.

Here are some tips for caring for an older dog:

*While a senior dog does enjoy getting out, let him decide what his limits are. Seniors often prefer to spend the day napping. This can make them seem aloof or disinterested, but they still need love and attention.

*Stimulate the dog’s senses with a car ride, trips to the park or visits with friends. Just like senior people, senior dogs need some excitement in their lives.

*A senior dog may need more comforts in old age. Put a small footstool in front of the bed or couch to make these comfy spots more accessible. Invest in an orthopedic foam bed for the old dog to rest his weary bones.

*Senior dogs chill more easily. Keep his hair coat longer or add a blanket or heating pad on his bed.

*Set up vet care, such as dental checkups and blood workups every couple of years. Be aware of his weight. Many medical conditions worsen with extra pounds. Talk to your vet about how to keep your senior dog trim with nutritious food.

*Help ease his arthritic joints with gentle massages. Ask your vet about arthritis medications; they can make a big difference in how your dog feels.
