Shelter Offering Half-Off Cat Adoption Fee

Currently, all local shelters are inundated with cats and kittens. Many will be euthanized, and it's often the older ones that are put down first.

Kittens attract young and old admirers alike. Who can resist their sweetness?

But for the abandoned, heartbroken and forgotten adult cats, life is not so easy.

If you’re considering adopting a feline, by all means check out the flood of kittens available at but also give the older cats a look. You may be their last chance for a loving home.

Currently, all local shelters are inundated with cats and kittens. So much so that Southwest Communities Animal Shelter has extended its half-off cats adoption fee: Adoptees can take home two cats for the price of one. Sadly, irresponsible pet owners fail to spay or neuter their animals and the result is a sea of unwanted kittens come spring and summer. To make room for the new arrivals, many of the shelter cats get euthananized – and it’s often the older ones that are put down first.

When adopting an older cat, usually, what you see is what you get. Adult cats have grown beyond that active, playful stage, and are generally happy to sit on your lap to just purr and sleep.

Contrary to popular belief, adult cats can and do bond closely with new owners and they are a good match for many people. They can provide joy without all the worry and activeness that go with little kittens.

Adult cats and those near adulthood are better for homes with small children, as little kittens can get hurt by tots who hug too hard or think an animal is a toy.

Adult cats are definitely the choice for homes with people who may be unsteady on their feet, such as the elderly, as kittens tend to scurry underfoot and can cause an unexpected fall.

When cared for properly, cats can live well into their teens and sometimes even into the early 20s.

If adopting a kitten, consider getting two if you work outside of your home. Kittens love to play together. Having two can be a lot of work in the beginning months, but can bring great joy for many years to come.

Whatever you decide, cat or kitten, remember adopting a feline companion saves a life.
