Murrieta is among at least 100 cities where rallies will be Monday in an effort to call attention to the so-called lack of evidence-based maternity care in the U.S. such as "unnecessary" Cesarean sections.

Men, women and children plan to gather on Sept. 3 outside as part of a national movement, “National Rally for Change on Labor Day," according to a news release from ImprovingBirth.org.

Improving Birth was founded with the vision of encouraging hospital administrators to review their birth-specific policies and procedures.

"We ask that they implement incentive programs for doctors and nurses to get up-to-date information and education about the most current care practices," the news release stated.

The movement has gathered support from talk show host Ricki Lake, and sponsors such as International Cesarean Awareness Network and the American Association of Birth Centers, according to the news release.

“Despite the dire situation, this is not a protest,” said Dawn Thompson, founder of Improving Birth. “It is a public awareness campaign to bring attention to the outdated practices that have been proven time and again to not be what is best for mothers and babies.”

The rally gets under way at 10 a.m. Monday and ends at noon.
