Murrieta Restaurant Heats It Up For Reality Rally
Reality Rally heats up on Saturday when one lucky local will go head-to-head in a wing contest against three reality TV stars.
Things are heating up this week in the Reality Rally Temecula Valley. All week long, Buffalo Wild Wings in Murrieta is donating 10 cents per extra wing ordered to the charity-based operation.
The week will culminate on Saturday when rally organizers sponsor a free family event at the Murrieta restaurant. From 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., the venue will host a fun zone for kids with a rock wall, slides and jumpers; live music and entertainment; police and fire truck displays; and autograph signing with three reality TV stars.
Then at 2 p.m., one lucky wing-eater will be chosen to compete against three reality stars in the Blazin’ Challenge. The contestant will be chosen from a pool of wing-eaters who were successful in completing the Blazin’ Challenge last week at Buffalo Wild Wings. Reality stars competing will include Earl Cole of “Survivor: Fiji;” Bobby “Bob Dawg” Mason of “Survivor: Panama;” and Zach Swerdzewski of “Big Brother 8.”
What is Reality Rally?
Reality Rally is a fundraiser for Michelle’s Place, a breast cancer resource center in Murrieta. Not only is the goal to raise $100,000, it is to highlight the Temecula Valley, according to founder Gillian Larson.
Larson, 64, a Temecula resident, was a contestant on “Survivor: Gabon.” The showed aired in 2008, but is now being aired in South Africa, which is where Larson hails from. After trying out for eight years, Larson made it on the show, only to be the second person voted off.
“It was a huge letdown,” Larson said. “I was really sad, but through it I learned that life isn’t all you hope it will be; it is what you make of the rest of it. Reality Rally came out of me being booted.”
She said she got the vision for it when she spent five weeks on an island after being booted off the show. It was a way for her to bring the reality world to the area she is proud to call home, she said.
“I just love this area. That is the entire reason I am doing this; to highlight it,” she said.
The yearlong rally is leading up to an “Amazing Race” type event, to be held April 15-17. For $150, community members can sign up to be on a team of three. Each team will have one reality star assigned to it.
Reality Rally Executive Producer Corinna Coram said 110 reality stars have expressed interest in participating, and several spots are still open on the teams.
Larson, who has volunteered on many occasions with the Susan G. Komen 3-Day For the Cure in San Diego, said supporting a local cancer resource center was something close to her heart.
She is doing it in honor of her brother, who died from pancreatic cancer last year, as well as a “Survivor” contest, Jenn Lyon, who died from breast cancer at age 36. She is also doing it in honor of Michelle Watson, whose parents founded Michelle’s Place in 2001. Michelle died of breast cancer at age 26.
“I feel like their spirit is really driving this,” Larson said.
