Murrieta Marine Held on $1M Bail in Torture, Spousal Abuse Case

A Murrieta man—who according to news reports is a gunnery sergeant in the Marine Corps—has been charged with torture and spousal abuse.

Anthony Eugene Rollins, 33, is being held in lieu of $1 million bail at Southwest Detention Center near Murrieta after he was arrested by Murrieta police Feb. 26 in the 26000 block of Avery Place, according to sheriff's jail records.

Murrieta police could not immediately be reached late Thursday for comment on the circumstances surrounding his arrest.

The alleged attacks occurred Nov. 1, 2012 and Feb. 2, 2013, court records indicate.

On Thursday, Rollins appeared before a judge at Southwest Justice Center, court records show. He has pleaded not guilty to both charges and is due in court again April 3 for a preliminary hearing.

Rollins faces up to seven years in prison if convicted of the torture charge alone, according to Riverside County District Attorney's Office Spokesman John Hall.

The torture charge "is based on the evidence of the injuries the victim sustained as well as the amount of time over which she received them," Hall wrote in an emailed response to Patch.

The victim—identified in news accounts as Rollins' girlfriend—was granted a temporary restraining order against him on Feb. 26 and a permanent restraining order on March 15, according to court records.
